Over in the Meadow
By John Langstaff
Illustrated by Fedor Rojankovsky
1957
Hey kiddos! The Boog and I are basking in what is left of spring. (I just realized my last few posts were about animals) Go figure! I might as well make this an official nature month seeing as though the next book on my list happens to be about Mag Pies, but that’s for another time. Anyhoo, I found this lovely ex-library copy of Over In The Meadow and gobbled it up right away! When a book is illustrated a certain way it makes me unable to put it down and this is one of those whimsical, stare at the pictures and sometimes forget about the words, kinda books…… only the words are just as good as the illustrations themselves. After looking this one up on the good old internet, I saw that not only is it still in print, (it is available in paperback) John Langstaff and Rojankovsky collaborated on an earlier book entitled Frog Went a Courtin' that was published in 1956. So I know if this, being thier second book, is great, I just have to check out the first!

Over in the meadow in a new little hive lived an old mother queen and her honeybees five. "Hum," said the mother, "We hum," said the five; So they hummed and were glad in their new little hive.
Without question, this book is a must have for anyone who loves vintage children’s books. There is plenty to see with every turn of the page that it’s hard not to find something new every time you read it. (and with the Boog, that is something I truly treasure, considering the amount of re-reads I find myself… well… reading.)
P.S The book is based on an old counting song for kids which has been a lasting favorite for many generations..... you can find a version of the song here
